Preschool Teacher Position Description

Trinity UMC, Aiken, SC

Reports to: Preschool Director and Preschool Board

Position Status: Part-Time (≤30 hours/week, 8:00-1:00 M-Th, closed June & July)

Salary Range: $12 to $16 per hour

Position Summary

Responsible for providing a safe, nurturing, Christ-centered learning environment for preschool-aged children.

Supports children’s spiritual, emotional, social, physical, and intellectual development through developmentally appropriate activities and positive classroom management.

Models Christian values in all interactions with the children, parents and staff.

Responsibilities

Spiritual Leadership

  • Incorporate age-appropriate Christian education, prayer, Bible stories, chapel experiences, and faith formation into the preschool program.
  • Model Christian character, compassion, professionalism, and hospitality.
  • Foster positive relationships with children, families, staff, church members, and the community.

Classroom Instruction & Child Development

  • Plan and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and activities.
  • Foster children’s growth in language, motor, cognitive, social, and emotional skills.
  • Create a warm, welcoming, and engaging classroom environment.
  • Encourage curiosity, creativity, independence, and positive self-esteem.
  • Maintain classroom routines and structure appropriate for preschool-aged children.

Safety & Supervision

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all children at all times.
  • Follow all church, preschool, and state licensing regulations and policies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of assigned classroom, bulletin boards, materials and spaces.
  • Supervise children during classroom, playground, snack, and transition times.
  • Assist in supervision of the loading and unloading of children (car line).

Communication & Collaboration

  • Maintain positive communication with parents regarding children’s progress and behavior.
  • Work cooperatively with preschool staff, church staff, and volunteers.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and church-related preschool events as required.
  • Report concerns regarding children’s development, safety, or behavior to the Preschool Director.


Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain attendance, incident reports, and other required documentation.
  • Prepare classroom materials and supplies as needed.
  • Participate in classroom setup, seasonal programs, and special events.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of child development and early childhood education practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a ministry-focused environment.
  • Familiarity with computer programs/systems (e.g. eMail, MS Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc.)
  • Must pass background screening and comply with child protection policies.
  • Must attain CPR and First Aid certification.

Non-Mandatory, Preferred Qualifications

  • Early Childhood Education degree/education preferred.
  • Previous preschool or childcare leadership experience.
  • Experience working in a church or faith-based educational setting.
  • Familiarity with the ministries and values of the United Methodist Church.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move throughout classrooms and playground areas.
  • Ability to lift ≤40 pounds, if needed.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergencies.
  • Ability to engage actively with children and staff throughout the day.

Work Schedule

The Teacher’s schedule generally follows the preschool calendar, with additional responsibilities for planning, parent meetings, church coordination, and special events.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation and benefits are determined by the church based on experience, education, and program size.
